| The Phoenix Ranch School Kindergarten Program |
| |
Welcome to the kindergarten program presented at the Phoenix Ranch School. This is a fun, nurturing, and appropriately challenging program taught by teachers who understand and respond to the developmental and emotional needs of our five year olds. Kindergarten is a magical year for children and parents and an important introduction to elementary school.
The phonics and literature program combine to form a comprehensive approach to emerging student literacy. The integrated approach combines reading, writing, auditory skills, and oral language skills to help children gain reading basics. The program is multi-sensory and is presented through visual, kinesthetic, and auditory means.
Our computer technology supports both reading and math programs. The Phoenix purchases the “Book Flix” online reading program for our students. Used in combination with other software and online learning sites, we extend reading and math opportunities through daily computer use.
The kindergarten math curriculum implements the “Singapore Math” program in conjunction with the Center for Innovation in Education “Math Their Way” program. Concrete methods of instruction help kindergarten students prepare for more abstract mathematical concepts. All instruction involves hands-on activities. Concepts include patterning and sequencing, comparing and estimating, sorting and classifying, graphing, counting and writing, set recognition, number-set correlation, and more.
The science curriculum is presented in conjunction with science support materials implementing a hands-on approach to science. Different thematic units will be presented including: Pollywogs to Frogs, Butterflies, Animals, and Plants and Seeds.
Social studies lessons include a discussion of friends, family, and community. Literature and discussions support concepts of good citizenship, responsibility, cultural sensitivity, good leadership, and more. The curriculum includes a subscription of “Time for Kids,” a student magazine.
Kindergarten students attend one Spanish class per week for thirty minutes. Basic instruction introduces students to the pronunciation and intonation patterns, basic grammatical structures and vocabulary. The Spanish curriculum also includes several storybooks and fun activities.
Music class is offered once each week for thirty minutes. The instructor will focus on group singing, preparation for basic theory, identification of musical instruments, and use of rhythm instruments.
Students participate in physical education for 30 minutes a day. The focus is on: large muscle development, coordination skills, games, sport skills, and listening skills. |
